Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Serving Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties
Until Further Notice
Due to structural conditions on the 40th Street Bridge, the City of Philadelphia Streets Department put weight restrictions into effect on January 8, 2007. All trips on Routes 38 and 40 will operate with long-term detours.
Westbound buses will operate north on 41st St to Mantua Ave then across the new bridge at 42nd St to Girard Ave. Along Girard, buses will travel in the trolley lane and stop at the center boarding island at 41st St, then turn north on 41st St before returning to regular routing at Parkside Ave.
Eastbound buses will operate on 41nd St, to Girard Ave, Girard Avenue to 42nd Street and Westminster Avenue before returning to regular routing.
Customers traveling to and from points north of the 40th St Bridge to University City and 40th & Market can expect additional travel time of up to 10 minutes depending on time of day and traffic conditions. Signs will be posted at all discontinued and at new, extended detour bus stops for Routes 38 and 40.
These detours will continue until work is completed to rebuild the 40th Street Bridge.
Until Further Notice
The City of Philadelphia is scheduled to begin the reconstruction of the South Street Bridge on Monday, December 8, 2008. This work is expected to last approximately 2 years.
SEPTA Bus Routes 9, 12, 21, 30, 31, 40, 42, 44, 124, 125, and LUCY, operating in and around the South Street, 30th Street Station, and the University City area, may experience in-service travel delays due to the increased traffic volume as other vehicles seek alternate routes around the construction.
In addition, due to weight restrictions on the Chestnut Street Bridge, the SEPTA stops at 30th & Chestnut, Schuylkill Ave (29th St) and 24th Street on Chestnut Street are discontinued until further notice.
Southbound Route 9 buses will turn at 30th Street on to Market Street then 23rd Street before resuming their normal Chestnut Street routing.
SEPTA will continue to monitor all bus routes in this area and will make service and route adjustments as necessary.
During this time, customers may wish to consider other SEPTA travel options including:
Regional Rail service to University City Station (Convention Blvd at South Street)
Subway Surface Trolley Lines (to 36th, 37th, 40th St Stations)
Market Frankford Line (30th, 34th St Stations)
The City Of Philadelphia Streets Department website can provide additional information for this reconstruction project.
