Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Serving Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties
Taking public transportation means sharing space, so it is important for riders to treat each other with courtesy and respect. Traveling on SEPTA can be a pleasant and comfortable experience when all riders demonstrate thoughtful consideration for one another.
The general passenger etiquette guidelines found below apply to our entire multi-modal system. We have also prepared tips designed for the unique concerns associated with bus, trolley, subway and Regional Rail services. In addition, there is a separate section for our transportation centers, stations and bus loops.
We're all in it together. Your continued support to help make passenger etiquette a daily habit is appreciated.
In 2014 SEPTA launched a direct message campaign - Dude It's Rude -- to address etiquette and quality of ride issues for all modes of our service. We wanted to remind people that they're not alone when they're on a Bus, Trolley, Subway, or Regional Rail car. Secretly we hoped attitudes and public behavior would change and that everyone would realize that courtesy, especially to others, is an important part of a pleasant travel environment.
The response from many customers, when we first launched Dude It's Rude, was positive. But sadly discourteous behavior on the SEPTA system persists, including some things too gross for us to talk about (clipping your nails on a bus...REALLY?) so we're unwrapping the next phase of our Dude It's Rude campaign.
As you travel, you'll continue see some of our original messages and they will be joined by reminders about eating and drinking on SEPTA vehicles, over-sharing your music and conversations with everyone onboard, and blocking the aisles. We've also updated our Passenger Etiquette page on the SEPTA website - there you will find tips and videos focused on courteous riding.
We know this campaign is a little edgy but if our graphics or slogan grabs your attention and you read the message -- we're halfway to creating a more pleasant travel environment for everyone.
Whether you're a daily commuter, or an occasional rider, this information will help guide you through your travels.
