Market-Frankford Subway-Elevated Line
The Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (PRT) began construction on the Market Street Subway-Elevated Line on April 6, 1903 between 69th Street and 15th Street. The City’s oldest high speed line debuted on March 4, 1907, with service operating through West Philadelphia on elevated tracks before continuing through Center City in a tunnel. PRT extended service to 2nd, Chestnut and South Streets in 1908. The Chestnut and South Street extensions were discontinued in 1939.
The City of Philadelphia broke ground on the Frankford Elevated Line in 1915 and the line opened to the public on November 5, 1922, providing Northeast residents with service to Center City and a connection with the Market Street Subway-Elevated Line at 2nd Street. The two lines were later combined to form today’s Market-Frankford Subway Elevated Line.
