SEPTA Key | Introducing the Future of Fare Payment at SEPTA

the key to the future of fare payment is arriving at your station

As part of the SEPTA Key program rollout for Transit, we are continuing the work to modernize ALL of the fareline equipment at Broad Street Line and Market Frankford Line Stations.

In the first phase of this project, some of the existing turnstiles were replaced with new SEPTA Key turnstiles (with red Validator pads). The new turnstile equipment does not accept Tokens or Coins so customers either must use the old turnstile or pay at the Cashier Booth.

Until now, Dilworth Park was the only transit fareline entrance that is 100% SEPTA Key equipped but that is about change. Beginning Monday, January 25, 2016, 16 more Broad Street and Market Frankford Line Stations will join Dilworth Park with the installation of ALL SEPTA Key turnstiles and accessible gates. Once the installation work is complete at these stations, customers using a Token or Coins MUST GO TO THE CASHIER BOOTH TO PAY THEIR FARE.

SEPTA Ambassadors will be out at these stations to help introduce customers to the new SEPTA Key equipment and answer questions. Details about the installation dates and when Ambassadors will be available will be posted at each station.

The following is the list of the Stations and the dates when the work is scheduled to take place. All fareline work will take place after 6:00 p.m. so we ask customers to please be alert for these activities.

The following is a quick guide to fare payment at these stations, once the SEPTA Key equipment upgrade is completed:

FARELINE TURNSTILES

  • SWIPE READER: Use for Current SEPTA passes (magnetic stripe on the back) or Senior Citizens with a PA Driver/Non Driver License
  • Don't try to speed through the turnstile - look for the Green on the Validator Pad after you swipe for smooth access to the platform

CASHIER BOOTH

  • TOKENS: Drop in the slotted box at Cashier Window
  • CASH: Exact change fare accepted
  • TRANSFERS (PRESENT/PURCHASE): Exact change required to purchase a transfer
  • ONE DAY CONVENIENCE PASS: Present to Cashier to be validated (Good for 8 rides taken on one day - pass must be punched by Cashier for travel from this station)
  • SENIOR/REDUCED FARE WITH PAPER IDENTIFICATION: Present to Cashier (Seniors - FREE/Reduced Fare - 50% of fare/transfer)

RED FRAMED VALIDATOR PAD

  • This is a new feature on the turnstiles. In the future, you'll tap your new contactless chip, SEPTA Key Card to pay your fare but right now the Validator will just show if your fare has been accepted
