New Silverliner V Rail Cars Make Public Debut

Track O served as the stage for the much awaited debut of the new Silverliner V rail cars during a special public event at Suburban Station on Tuesday, April 13th.

SEPTA General Manager Joseph M. Casey joined with Min Ho Lee, President of Hyundai Rotem, and Schinichi Uchiyama, Senior Vice President and Regional General Manager of Sojitz Corp. to introduce to riders the first married pair of 120 new Silverliner V rail cars.

"So much effort, planning and design has gone into the production of these new Regional Rail cars," Casey said. "To see this project go from concept to delivery of the pilot cars is tremendous. The new cars bring improved service and a better experience for our customers."

Riders were then able to get a sneak peek of the state-of-the art trains featuring larger windows, wider aisles, an enhanced seating arrangement and the latest in climate control technology and video monitors for real-time broadcast information and advertisements. The cars also fully comply with American with Disabilities (ADA) requirements and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) passenger car strength and safety requirements.

"I love the new cars, they're a good incentive for us to do our jobs even better," said SEPTA Conductor R.D. Murray who called out, "All aboard the new Silverliner Vs," kicking off the event and inviting the public to view the shiny, sleek trains. "I see it as a boost in morale and one more way to showcase our skills. That's why customer service is primary and what a conductor is all about, professionalism to the fullest."

The new Silverliner V rail cars, manufactured by Hyundai Rotem of South Korea and Sojitz Corp. of America will undergo a series of testing prior to being placed into  passenger service. During the next two years, the 120 new commuter trains will replace portions of the regional rail fleet that date back more than 40 years.

The remainder of the growing fleet of cars is being assembled at the Hyundai Rotem plant in South Philadelphia. Up to 200 mechanics, electricians and supervisors will work on turning the shells into state-of-the-art Regional Rail cars. When completed each 85-foot long car will seat up to 109 passengers and upgrade the SEPTA Regional Rail fleet. The first Silverliner Vs are expected to be placed in service later this year.

The Silverliner Vs are on public display at Suburban Station through April 15th. The new rail cars are an essential aspect of SEPTA's commitment to providing quality transportation by accommodating its ever-growing ridership and improving the overall riding experience for commuters in the Greater Philadelphia region.
