SEPTA construction
crews transformed the Torresdale & Cottman Avenue bus loop into a
fully modern, ADA-accessible facility for our customers who ride bus
route 28, 56, 70 and 84. This project’s goal of creating an
improved level of safety, convenience, and vehicle movement around the
facility was achieved with the help of successful partnerships between
multiple community groups.

New concrete islands with benches and trash receptacles create separate bus lanes.
|
Torresdale & Cottman loop has numerous
customer-focused upgrades. Four islands were constructed as
designated waiting areas for customers, featuring newly installed
benches and trash receptacles. Together, the islands give each
bus an individually assigned lane for customers to board and exit from.

The freshly paved surface features an artistic crosswalk.

A freshly paved vehicle surface features
crosswalks with an artistic outline and SEPTA logo. New signage
has been posted around the facility to enhance identification of bus
locations and travel information, while new lighting creates a brighter
atmosphere for waiting customers. SEPTA was able to match the
design of decorative light posts and crosswalk patterns to the rest of
Torresdale Avenue through a collaboration with the Major Artery
Revitalization Committee and Tacony Civic Association.

A new shelter to protect customers from the elements.
|
Construction of a brand new, open-air
shelter gives streetside customers a new seating area and shield from
nature’s elements. Freshly poured sidewalks surround the
facility and curb cuts provide ADA access.
A modern, pre-fabricated crew building; protective fencing along the
perimeter; and reinforced retaining walls are other major architectural
improvements to the facility. Members from the City Of
Philadelphia’s Community Life Improvement Program helped
coordinate the species and details of the landscaping lining western
perimeter. Soon to be added, with assistance of the Philadelphia
Mural Arts Commission, is a mural entitled “SEPTA Through The
Years” – a tribute depicting the pivotal role SEPTA
provides the people and places of Tacony.

A new, pre-fabricated crew building replaced the old structure.

Construction projects always bring dirt and disruption to the regular
course of business while work takes place, but SEPTA hopes riders using
the new Torresdale & Cottman bus loop will find this revitalized
facility will improve their travel experience as they use the SEPTA
system.

SEPTA is committed to modernizing its infrastructure
to improve the customer experience.
