Super Bowl Drive Starts with SEPTA

Broad Street Line Sports Express Trains in Service for Playoff Run

January 3, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Gearing up for a Super Bowl drive void of traffic congestion, SEPTA will once again provide football fans with a timesaving and comfortable ride to this weekend’s playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field.

Fans heading to the Eagles playoff contest against the New York Giants at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 can lessen congestion by taking SEPTA Broad Street Line “Sports Express” service as upwards of 70,000 spectators are expected to attend the game.

On Sunday SEPTA Sports Express trains will leave the Fern Rock Transportation Center every 10 minutes between 1:10 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and stop only at the Olney Transportation Center, Erie, Girard, Spring Garden, Race-Vine, City Hall and Walnut-Locust Stations en route to Pattison Station and Lincoln Financial Field.

The express trip from City Hall takes only about eight minutes. Passengers will also find frequent local Broad Street Line trains in service on Sunday. Local trains take only 11 minutes to travel to the sports complex from City Hall.

SEPTA regional rail and Market-Frankford Line services as well as SEPTA bus and trolley routes provide convenient connections with the Broad Street Line in Center City Philadelphia. Parking at SEPTA regional rail stations is free on weekends. Passengers should purchase tokens prior to the events. A pack of two SEPTA tokens costs just $2.60 and provides a discount when compared to the one-way base fare of $2.00.

In addition, fans traveling to the sports complex can also take advantage of specially discounted parking rate ($5.00) available at one of the five city-operated parking lots in Center City and then transfer to the Broad Street Line. SEPTA tokens can be purchased at the parking lots, which are all only a short walk away from the Broad Street Line City Hall Station.

The parking lots include:

  • AutoPark - JFK Plaza Garage - 15th & Arch Streets
  • AutoPark - Center City Lot - 15th & Arch Streets
  • Gateway Garage - 15th & Vine Streets
  • AutoPark - Gallery Mall - 10th & Filbert Streets
  • AutoPark - Jefferson - 10th & Ludlow Streets

Local and express trains will be standing by after the game to provide northbound service back to Fern Rock. To further expedite service, SEPTA will make the lower level platform at Pattison Station accessible due to the large crowds.

Broad Street Line Sports Express service has become a welcome and popular game day addition among area fans over the past several years. Commuters have embraced the advantages the line provides over driving and parking in the area of the sports complex.

During the Eagles regular season finale on Sunday, Broad Street Line Sports Express trains carried 9,400 riders to the game. The service has helped to ease traffic and parking issues all season long as this season’s average ridership per game (8,800) surpassed the previous year’s average by 8%.

Passengers can telephone the SEPTA Travel Information Center at (215) 580-7800 for more information.
