SEPTA to Open Fare Line at New 52nd Street Station

June 22, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA — SEPTA El riders will use the new 52nd Street Station building to board trains beginning Monday, June 25 as construction continues on the facility.

Demolition scheduled for the current station building will cause SEPTA to move the station’s fare line turnstiles and cashier booth to the new building as riders will board trains from the newly constructed station platform.

Construction, including work on the new station’s elevators and escalators, will be ongoing and riders with disabilities are advised to use the nearby 56th Street Station for service. SEPTA bus Routes 21 and 31 also travel to 56th Street via Chestnut and Walnut Streets.

The new station building at 52nd & Market Streets is part of the extensive Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project. MSE is rebuilding the western half of the subway-elevated line with six modern stations and replacing 11,000 feet of the line’s two-column structure with new single-beam support columns.

New stations at 56th and 60th & Market Streets are now open and in service. The new 60th Street Station opened for service last Monday. The 52nd Street Station is scheduled for completion in 2008. Additional information about the MSE project is available online at www.theelseptaatwork.com. Information on all SEPTA service is available by calling (215) 580-7800.
