SEPTA Gets You to Sunday's Bike Race without Breaking a Sweat

Additional R6 Norristown Service to Operate for Bicycling Enthusiasts

June 5, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA - With all due respect to competitors participating in this year’s Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, there’s a quicker way to get to the starting and finishing points without even breaking a sweat – aboard SEPTA’s R6 Norristown Line.

SEPTA will provide enhanced R6 Norristown service featuring more frequent trains and extra late-night trains to accommodate spectators traveling to this year’s race scheduled for Sunday, June 8. The additional late-night service will allow spectators to partake in activities around Manayunk or Center City Philadelphia following the race’s conclusion.

SEPTA has modified R6 Norristown service on the day of the race to operate every half-hour instead of hourly between Center City Philadelphia and Elm Street Station in Norristown beginning at 7:20 a.m. until approximately 9 p.m. to offer fans improved access to the Manayunk and Center City Philadelphia portions of the competition.

Two late-night trains traveling to Center City Philadelphia have also been added to the schedule departing Elm Street Station at 11:48 p.m. and 12:39 a.m. while two additional late-night trains will depart Suburban Station at 12:15 a.m. and 1 a.m.

R6 Norristown trains travel from Suburban Station in Center City Philadelphia to the “Wall” in Manayunk in about 15 minutes while a trip to Manayunk from the Norristown Transportation Center takes about 17 minutes.

For the convenience of passengers, SEPTA ticket offices at the Norristown Transportation Center, Conshohocken, Manayunk and East Falls regional rail stations will be open from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.  SEPTA now also offers a new promotional weekend fare valid for travel on regional rail on weekends and holidays.

The promotional weekend fare is valid for round trip travel to and from Center City Philadelphia and may be purchased at regional rail ticket offices, on board trains or online at shop.septa.org. There is no additional charge for purchasing the promotional weekend tickets on board any train. Commuters planning to travel on SEPTA trains may park for free at SEPTA regional rail stations on weekends.

During last year’s bike race, SEPTA carried approximately 11,000 on the R6 Norristown Line.

A special one-day timetable is available online or at stations in Center City and along the R6 Norristown Line. Information on all SEPTA service is also available online or by phoning the SEPTA Customer Service Department at (215) 580-7800.
