MEET PATRICIA RUSSELL

Although born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Patricia Russell considers herself a true Philadelphian. The new Chair of SEPTA's Advisory Committee for Accessible Transportation (SAC) has lived here since 1988. She recently sat down with CCT Connections, sharing her thoughts and visions for SAC.

Patricia Russell

"I became a SAC member in 2006", she said. "Betty Homer (Associated Services for the Blind) told me about the group, and I thought with my disability (diabetes retinopathy) it would be something I could get into". Ms. Russell, who is an ordained minister, wears many hats when it comes to getting involved. She also serves as the superintendent and adult teacher at her Church Sunday School; is the fundraising coordinator on the Board of Directors for the Strawberry Mansion Center of Philadelphia; facilitator of inspirational ministries at ASB and has served on the U.S. Postal Council.

"I like people. I like to help people", she said emphatically. "It's important for people with disabilities to be heard and I see SAC as a way to get the message out." She was elected Vice-Chair in July 2006 and this past July, she was elected Chair, succeeding Dolly Singh.

My goals are to work with SEPTA as a team in making transportation in and around Philadelphia the model for everyone else. SEPTA has done so much, but there is so much more to be done. One of my goals is to have Braille information signs placed in all SEPTA stations.

Ms. Russell, who is married, the mother of three and a grandmother of eight, has personal goals, too. "I'm in seminary school and hope to get my Masters (degree) and eventually my PhD. It will take some effort, but I'll make it."

I wouldn't bet against her!
