In the course of your daily commute you see the train Engineer and Conductor, and perhaps a station Ticket Agent. But it actually takes many more people working 24 hours a day, to ensure the safe and timely operation of SEPTA rail service and we want to introduce you to them… Regional Rail Operations Center (RROC) – Train Dispatchers use state-of-the-art technology to see the location of and to dispatch the 726 weekday trains in service on the system. The RROC also makes all announcements to the outlying stations. Car Inspectors, Yards, and Shops – Every day, every train car and engine is inspected and repaired, as needed, in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards and requirements. Coach Cleaners – The word “coach” may be a throw back to old times, but these people clean the rail cars to make sure they’re ready for your daily commute. Conductors – Receive approximately 6 months of training and instruction on rules, rail operations, and customer service. Some trains also have Assistant Conductors. All Conductors and Assistant Conductors are recertified annually. Locomotive Engineer – Receive approximately 9 months of training and instruction on FRA and SEPTA rules, rail operations, and train handling. Engineers also must be recertified each year. Ticket Agents – Sell fares instruments and provide customers with travel information at station locations. These agents are SEPTA contractors. Passenger/Customer Services – Are on duty at our Center City stations to provide assistance and travel information to customers. Personnel Assignment Office – Handles the daily assignment of Engineers, Conductors, and other train service employees. Management/Administration – Responsible for the daily monitoring of rail operations and administrative activities including scheduling, training, and regulatory compliance. |
