A Message to Regional Rail Customers

PM Service Delays - Wednesday, July 12, 2017

As the evening rush was beginning last night, SEPTA Regional Rail service was impacted by 3 separate incidents that caused significant delays and inconvenience for many customers.

The Wilmington/Newark Line was the first to be effected when Amtrak lost overhead power on an outbound track at 3:30 p.m., which impacted Trains #7239 and # 7241 going towards Newark and Wilmington. Buses were dispatched to Curtis Park to pick up customers from Train #7241 but other Wilmington/Newark riders experienced long delays and train cancellations. The Amtrak power loss also created cascading delays for Airport Line trains. The cause of the power outage remains under investigation by both AMTRAK and SEPTA.

At 4:55 p.m. a pedestrian walked in front of a moving Warminster Line train as it was arriving at Willow Grove station. Several trains that left Center City after this train were delayed or had to be cancelled while the Police completed their investigation. Buses were dispatched with the intention of picking up customers at Roslyn and Willow Grove Station but we received permission to resume train service before they arrived at the stations.

Just as the PM rush was winding down, at 7:05 p.m., a critical crossover switch located south of 30th Street Station failed. This created significant delays on the Paoli/Thorndale, Cynwyd, Trenton, and Chestnut Hill West Lines. Some trains were held at or near 30th Street and all customers traveling outbound on these lines had to move to the inbound service platform at 30th Street to board trains. Repairs to the switch were completed within 90 minutes and regular train operations resumed. A preliminary investigation of this incident identified a failure in the electronics component.

These significant service delays combined with the heat of the day made for difficult travel conditions. We regret the considerable inconvenience customers may have encountered and we want to affirm our commitment to work to address problems and improve Regional Rail service and reliability.
