Energy Savings Spotlight: SEPTA ESCO

July 7, 2017

In August 2016, a multi-facility energy efficiency initiative kicked-off at five SEPTA backshops and depots. Now, a year later, the multi-million dollar project is coming to completion, reducing energy consumption at Germantown, Berridge, Fern Rock, Southern, and Courtland.

The initiative, outlined in the 2012 Energy Action Plan, was made possible through an Energy Savings Contract (ESCO) with Constellation Energy Inc. Under the ESCO, Constellation Energy Inc, financed the cost of all the energy-related investments and guaranteed the energy saving. SEPTA, in turn, agreed to pay Constellation back over a period of 7 to 17 years.

Examples of the energy conservation measures (ECM) implemented include:

  • LED Lighting Upgrades
  • Steam Valve/Fitting Insulation
  • Bare Pipe Insulation
  • Building Envelope Improvements
  • Window Replacements
  • New High Speed Garage Doors
  • HVAC Controls
  • Infrared Heaters

Since the implementation of ECM's, the project has significantly reduced energy consumption at each location, with a maximum 37% reduction in energy consumption at SEPTA's Courtland location from 2015-2016. See table below. Moving forward, energy consumption from these five locations is expected to continuously decrease, which will reflect positively on SEPTA's GHG emissions profile.
