Attention Route 38 and Route 40 Riders

Extended Service Detours – 40th St Bridge

Due to structural conditions on the 40th Street Bridge, the City of Philadelphia Streets Department has put weight restrictions into effect as of Monday, January 8, 2007.  This requires all SEPTA buses traveling over this structure to be detoured.

All trips on Routes 38 and 40 will operate with long-term detours as follows:

Route 38 (Map)

• Westbound buses will operate on Parrish St then to 41st St, Mantua, 42nd St, Girard, and 41st St before returning to regular routing at Parkside Ave. 

• Eastbound buses will operate via normal route to Belmont Avenue and 41st Street then 41st St., to Girard Ave, Girard Avenue to 42nd Street, Westminster Avenue, 40th Street to Brown Street, then regular routing.

Route 40 (Map)

• Westbound buses will operate north on 41st St to Mantua Ave then across the new bridge at 42nd St to Girard Ave.  Along Girard, buses will travel in the trolley lane and stop at the center boarding island at 41st St, then turn north on 41st St before returning to regular routing at Parkside Ave. 
• Eastbound buses will operate on 41nd St, to Girard Ave, Girard Avenue to 42nd Street and Westminster Avenue before returning to regular routing.

40th St Bridge Detour Travel Tips

• Customers traveling to/from points north of the 40th St Bridge to University City and 40th & Market can expect additional travel time of up to 10 minutes depending on time of day and traffic conditions.
• Signs will be posted at all discontinued and at new, extended detour bus stops for Routes 38, and 40.

South Street Bridge Detours
Beginning January 22, 2007

Due to similar structural conditions on the South Street Bridge, the City of Philadelphia Streets Department put new weight restrictions into effect on Monday, January 22, 2007.  This requires all SEPTA buses traveling over this structure to be detoured.  Selected trips on Route 12 and all trips on Route 40 will operate with long term detours.

These detours will continue until work is completed to rebuild the South Street and 40th Street Bridges.
