Attention Route 12 and Route 40 Riders

Extended Service Detours – South Street Bridge
Beginning Monday, January 22, 2007

Due to structural conditions on the South Street Bridge, the City of Philadelphia Streets Department put new weight restrictions into effect on Monday, January 22, 2007.  This requires all SEPTA buses traveling over this structure to be detoured.  Selected trips on Route 12 and all trips on Route 40 will operate with long term detours as follows:

Route 12 (Map)

• Westbound (A.M.)
  Via Walnut St., left on 34th St., right on Civic Center Boulevard, and then regular route.
  
  
• Eastbound (P.M.)
  Via 33rd St., right on Chestnut St., right on 23rd St. to South St., and then regular route.

The westbound trips to University City at 8:15, 8:49 and 9:14 a.m. and the eastbound trips to Center City at 4:37, 5:13, 5:37, and 6:05 p.m. will be the only Route 12 service affected by the detour

Route 12 Travel Alternatives

For westbound service, customers may take regular northbound Routes 7 or 12 on 22nd St and transfer to the detoured Route 12 University City trips at 22nd & Walnut. 
For eastbound service, customers traveling from University City may transfer to the regular southbound Routes 7 or 12 at 23rd & Locust.

Route 40 (Map)

• Westbound
  Via Lombard St., right on 22nd St., left on Walnut St., left on 34th St., right on Spruce St., and then regular route.
  
  
• Eastbound
  Via Spruce St., left on 33rd St., right on Chestnut St., right on 23rd St., left on South St., and then regular route.

South Street Bridge Detour Travel Tips

• Expect additional travel time between 5–15 minutes, depending on time of day and traffic conditions. Please be alert for future detour announcements that may result from the construction and traffic congestion.
  
  
• Westbound riders may want to consider taking an earlier bus during AM hours.  Please check the September 3rd schedule for travel times.

40th Street Bridge
Route 40 Detours

The Route 40 will also be detoured in the vicinity of the 40th Street Bridge. Customers traveling to/from points north of the 40th St Bridge, to University City, and 40th & Market can expect additional travel time of up to 10 minutes depending on time of day and traffic conditions.

Signs will be posted at all discontinued and new, extended detour bus stops for Routes 12, 38, and 40.

The detours on these routes will continue until work is completed to rebuild the South Street and 40th Street Bridges.
