Fare Information for Transit & Regional Rail Travel

SEPTA accepts cash for travel on any of its services. Exact fare is required except as noted below.

SEPTA recommends using a SEPTAKey card to obtain the best value.

SEPTA Key is a reloadable, contactless chip card that offers a host of options for seamless travel such as the self-serve flexibility of loading/reloading SEPTA fares to match your travel needs. The card costs $4.95, but when you register the card at septakey.org, that money goes into your card's Travel Wallet to use for future travel or purchases.

The SEPTA Key card can be used for travel on ALL SEPTA modes including: Regional Rail, Buses, Trolleys, Trackless Trolleys, Market-Frankford Line, Broad Street Line/Broad Ridge Spur, and Norristown High Speed Line.

Hate standing in line at a sales window? You can reload fares through the SEPTA Key website, at station Fare Kiosks, at SEPTA Sales Offices, with the help of sales agents, at the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center 1-855-567-3782, and from over 500 external sales outlets. Fare Kiosks are located in all Broad Street and Market-Frankford Line Stations, at Bus Loops, at Center City Regional Rail Stations (Temple University, Jefferson Station, Suburban Station, 30th Street Station and Penn Medicine Station) and at the Airport. Kiosks accept cash, credit, debit, tokens, Apple Pay, Google Pay, & Samsung Pay.

Right now, you have the option of loading a Weekly or Monthly TrailPass, a Cross County Pass, a Weekly or Monthly TransPass, a One Day Independence Pass, an Independence Pass 3-Day Bundle, One Day Convenience Pass, a Three-Day Convenience Pass, and/or Travel Wallet on your SEPTA Key card. The Travel Wallet allows you to pay as you go versus using a pass. The benefit of the Travel Wallet is that you will receive a discount for each ride and when riding Transit (bus, trolley, subway/elevated, and high speed) one free transfer.

The Key card can be set up with auto-load your SEPTA fare, or you can make fare purchases as you need them - it is your choice.

Traveling on SEPTA is Simple

When traveling on bus, trolley, subway/elevated, and/or the Norristown High Speed Line, simply tap your card on the validator to gain entry and the proper fare will be validated. All fares on these modes are one price, so you will not go wrong. No card? No problem! Cash is accepted onboard surface vehicles and Quick Trips can be purchased at Subway/Elevated station kiosks. A Quick Trip is a single trip ride purchased from Station Fare Kiosks on the Broad Street, Market/Frankford, Norristown High Speed Lines, and select Trolley stations. The Quick Trip is accepted at any station on the above lines, but only on the same day purchased. Quick Trips are priced equal to the base fare and transfers are not available, so using the Travel Wallet is the better option.

Since fare pricing is distance-based for Regional Rail travel, your card must be tapped at both the origin and destination stations of your trip; conductors are available on trains to assist. If needed, they can even process a cash or credit card payment onboard. Quick Trips are also available at Center City Fare Kiosks and Sales Offices for return travel and must be used within 2 hours of purchase. Travel Wallet fares offer a discount off the Quick Trip price, making Travel Wallet the better option.

Senior Fare Customers on SEPTA routes

Seniors ride free on SEPTA within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Half fare rates apply for travel outside the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

K-12 School Students

SEPTA has fully launched the Student Fare Card program. This allows a single Student Fare Card to be issued to eligible students at the beginning of the school year, for use until their High School graduation.
